These events and activities are open to anyone interested in biomedical research, public health and science in general.

  • Science in Health Live!

    Welcoming Year 12 pupils to Cardiff University’s School of Medicine for over 25 years

    This annual event gives attendees the opportunity to gain a feel for the excitement and challenges of biomedical research; visit a wide range of interactive exhibitions; listen to talks on hot topics in biomedical science; and get the chance to meet and question scientists and clinicians from across the whole spectrum of scientific and healthcare careers.

  • Life Sciences Challenge

    “University Challenge”-like inter-school competition across Wales

    This exciting initiative provides Year 10 pupils with an opportunity to meet young scientists who possess passion and enthusiasm for trying to understand the natural world.

    The quiz aims to inspire pupils across Wales to consider the possibilities of careers in science and runs in parallel across both English and Welsh medium schools.

  • Science in Health Work Experience

    Opportunity to participate in laboratory research at Cardiff University’s School of Medicine

    Year 12 pupils get to experience first-hand a range of cutting-edge technologies, working with a number of different investigators and their research groups.

    The scheme runs for a four-week period in June and July each year. Acceptance onto this work experience scheme is competitive; the annual closing date is 31 March.

  • Science in Health Public Lectures

    Free events to open up areas of concern in healthcare and present new research on health issues

    The lectures are held on Thursday evenings, running from October to April, at Cardiff University. All are welcome – including senior school pupils interested in a career in science or healthcare.

    Local Year 12 and 13 pupils have the opportunity to meet with the speaker prior to the lecture. All sessions are recorded and made available online so that you never miss a lecture.

  • "Virus Tinkerers" Escape Room

    A science-inspired escape room in the city centre of Cardiff

    Coinciding with Cardiff Science Festival in February 2020, local scientists and Tenovus Cancer Care created a bespoke escape room experience allowing players the chance to find out more about vital cancer research conducted in South Wales.

  • In2scienceUK

    Promoting social mobility and diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

    In2scienceUK empowers young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their potential through life changing opportunities that give them insights into STEM careers and research and boosts their skills and confidence.

    The programme allows Year 12 students to gain hands-on work experience through in-person STEM placements – connecting them to experts at universities and in industry working on the cutting edge of research and innovation.

  • Microbiology in Schools Advisory Committee (MiSAC)

    Promoting the teaching of microbiology in schools and colleges

    MiSAC develops and publishes new ideas for the educational use of microorganisms, including practical activities, answers queries, gives talks, contributes to training courses, interacts with examination boards, science suppliers, publishers and industry, and is a recognised authority on the safe use of microorganisms.

    The popular MiSAC UK Annual Competition is closely linked to the National Curriculum and attracts up to 2,000 student entries from across the UK each year.

  • Techniquest, Cardiff

    The largest science discovery centre in Wales

    Techniquest features a science theatre, a planetarium and an exhibition space with over 100 interactive exhibits aimed at visitors of all ages.

    It provides a range of services to schools and teachers to complement formal education provision in Wales and works extensively with public audiences - including local scientists who have staged special ‘After Hours’ events about the latest research on cancer, the immune system… and Superbugs!

    Cardiff Science Festival takes over Wales’ capital to inspire and educate.

    Presenters showcase science, technology, engineering and maths, integrating them into the capital city of Wales.

    The annual festival spreads throughout Cardiff’s libraries, cafes, bars and streets, with hidden events for you to discover.

  • Pint of Science

    Quench your thirst for knowledge!

    A worldwide science festival which brings researchers to your local pub, cafe or public space to share their scientific discoveries with you.

    Pint of Science has grown astronomically over the few years since two people decided to share their research in the pub.

    However, the core values remain the same: to provide a space for researchers and members of the public alike to come together, be curious, and chat about research in a relaxed environment outside of mysterious laboratories or daunting dark lecture theatres.

    Everyone has a place at the table to discuss the research going on both on our doorsteps and far beyond.

    No prior knowledge required.

  • Soapbox Science

    Transforming public areas into an arena for public learning and scientific debate

    An opportunity for everyone to enjoy, learn from, heckle, question, probe, interact with and be inspired by some of our leading scientists.

    No middle man, no PowerPoint slide, no amphitheatre – just remarkable women and non-binary scientists who are there to amaze you with their latest discoveries, and to answer the science questions you have been burning to ask.

    Look out for bat simulators, interactive experiments or giant pictures of volcanoes. Or simply hear them talk about what fascinates them, and why they think they have the most fantastic job in the world!
